PROJECT NAME: OR35 Rockfall at MP 72.3
MILE POINT: 72.25 to 72.36
ISSUE: The existing concrete barrier provides insufficient catchment at base of this soil and rock slope. Rocks frequently roll down the steep slope, bounce over the barrier, and impact the travel lanes.
PURPOSE AND NEED: Rockfall impacts traveler safety, travel time, and transportation system operations. Small rockfall have closed the highway for a portion of a day. Large rockfall can result in an extended closure.
PROPOSED SOLUTION: Pinned mesh with mechanical excavation of upper 10 feet of slope is the preferred design alternative. Mesh will control slope raveling and will minimize rollout into catchment area.
PRE-SCOPING COST ESTIMATE: $258,000
SCOPED COST ESTIMATE: $2,148,000
